The daffodil plant was first recorded in the China’s History of Plants (花史) as a gift from Tang emperor to the sister of his beloved imperial concubine Yang Gui Fei. The bowls for the imperial gift was of course made of gold, jade and 7 other jewels. The daffodil bowl we have today is one for the common folks, a ceramic bowl with green glaze from the Shi Wan kiln.

A delicate figurine of two pica pica (magpie) on a blossoming plum tree. The subject, a symbol of blessing, is often seen in painting, pottery and carvings; for the Chinese, the pica pica is bird of luck while the plum tree signified happiness, joy, peace, longevity and success. Here is a story about this lucky bird, in the Tong dynasty there was a man named Li Jing Yi. Outside Li’s house there was a pica pica nest on a tree, everyday he would feed the bird, after a while the bounding between the bird and Li grew. One day, out of the blue Li was arrested for a crime he did not commit, when he was most helpless in jail the pica pica came visited him and sang at the window for a long time. His was relieved by the bird’s visit and 3 days later, the good news about his release came. It is believed the bird can transformed as a imperial guard with the notice for his release. Since then, the pica pica is associated with the bearer of good news.

Kutani Ware (九谷燒) is one of the representative Japanese Iroe (multicolored over the glaze) porcelain produced in Kanazawa, Komatsu, Kaga, and Nomi city in the southern part of Ishikawa prefecture. It’s traced back to 1650’s in the Kutani village.
There are 3 periods in the Kutani Ware’s history: Ko-Kutani, Saiko Kutani, and Kutani. The ceramics of the three eras are all renowned and highly valued.
The ceramics produced in the first 50 years are called “Ko-Kutani,” literally meaning old Kutani. They consist of five colors, blue, green, yellow, purple, and red.

For the Asian Folkcraft Event, we have from Soil a Sake hyotan container with its own cup! A more poetic version of the whisky flask.
Hyotan (Gourd) is a symbol of good luck. This Japanese hyotan gourd is used as handy sake vessel, and complete with a stopper and a ceramic sake cup. The cup is delicately made, and has a hand painted and gilded decoration depicting a village scene, with a traditional Japanese architecture and pine trees in the background.

A press mould oval shape dish with black underglaze drawing and a top clear glaze.
Iron oxide wash on the outside of the plate.
The groggy clay body which enhance interesting texture after scrapping when the clay body is dry.

These are two Chinese words, 发福, made into calligraphy pottery sculpture. It is interesting how the 2 dimensional words is transformed into 3D with the expressive action of the brush strokes.
The words 发福 originally meant the blossoming of fortune, a blessing that can be related to 发财 the blossoming of money, as in KUNG HEI “FAT CHOI”. Nowadays, the words 发福 refers to the putting on weight during the middle age. A tease in disguise of a blessing.

For the Something Old Something New joint event, a bottle with lid in real gold and blue barium glaze finish (not food safe). Wheel thrown in one piece, lid is then cut from the body. Gold is applied after the stoneware firing, refire to a lower temperature of 750 C.
This dream like bottle made me think of Calvino’s Invisible City.

For me, these candle shades are like a father and son having a conversation with each other.
These candle shades are unglazed white stoneware, wheel thrown and then distorted, they are then carefully hand carved to get the openings for light.
