This is no ordinary wine jar but one that is without a lid.  One might wonder if all the wine has to be poured through the spout, but that will be a waste of wine.  Turning the jar upside down there is a hole at the bottom, but would’t the water just fall out when the jar is turned around?  The trick of the jar is built within the pottery, the hole a the bottom is extended by a tube which extends upwards to a height which is above the opening of the spout.  The wine is trapped around the tube ready to be poured out.

Remember the guri guri potion stopper?  It has now completed with a jar!
The jar has been custom made for the stopper.

The figurine belonged to the datu (shaman) of the Batak tribe in Sumatra.  Magic guri guri potion would have been kept in the jar, which is the ingredient for magic performed by the datu.
The figurine consists of 2 humans riding on a singa, a mythological creature that is benevolent and powerful, it is described to be part human, part buffalo, part crocodile.


While you are getting tangerine and kamquat for X’mas, get an extra portion of kamquat and preserve them.

 The Chinese believe that the salted kamquat is a natural remedy for any throat irritation or ailment.  Here is the recipe;

  1. soaked the kamquat in a bowl of water with a handful of salt for 10mins, washed, rinse and dry
  2. blanch the kamquat in boiling water (dont over cook them)
  3. put in a sieve and let dry for a day
  4. stir fried some ginger slices with salt
  5. place a layer of kamquat at the bottom of the jar, cover with a layer of sea salt
  6. repeat until the jar is full or when you run out of kamquat
  7. seal the top of the jar with a piece of a paper and tied it to the mouth of the jar
  8. place the jar in a cool dark dry place
  9. the kamquat will be ready in a couple of days, but as usual the longer it is kept, the better the effect
  10. to use; put a preserved kamquat in a cup, topped with boiling water and give the kamquat a squeeze with a spoon.

While typing this, I wonder if I should try a sweet version with cinnamon and sugar this year ….

When I think of a jar, my association would goes to food.  Cookies.  A glass jar filled with cookies.  Though I have never really bothered putting cookies in a jar … they are usually finished and there is nothing else to store.  Chinese jars are also made to store food stuff; dry goods such as tea, mushroom, charred rice, moist food like pickles, condiments etc.  Jars are a necessary for any kitchen.

Jars were used to contain sauces, paste and oil for sale in the grocery stores.  In the old days, it was these jars would be reused and everyone would bring their own bottles and containers to buy the stuff which are either wrapped in newspaper or tied together by a string of plant fiber (Cyperus Tegetiformis).  There was no concept of being environmentally friendly but the general atmosphere of not being wasteful, objects would take on different function as they fit again and again until it disintegrates.

Sadly, the jars and the recycled bottles have been replaced by plastic ones, local grocery stores by supermarkets and our countryside replaced by landfills.

This is a ceramic jar for keeping delicious food (a bit like a tuck box).  Before refrigerator became popular, food were kept in jars, pickles, all the special goodies for Chinese New Year, apart from the children this also attracted the ants.  In those days, this uniquely designed jar were a standard container in every Guang Dong household, it has a name “piss ant off”.  Here is the reason why; once the lid is closed off, water is poured into the trench to prevent the ants from climbing into the jar.
