Please pray for those who are suffering by the flood in Thailand, the worst in 50 years, and that serenity will return soon.

Praying monk figurine; they are usually found in a pair at either side of the Buddha statue, both kneeling, one praying and the other one has his hands resting on the thighs.

DIA300XH100mm, Japan

This is a wooden container for the preparation of sumeshi
(rice used for sushi).

  1. Cooked 6 bowls of rice with 100mm of kelp
  2. Prepare the vinegar dressing;
    60cml rice wine vinegar + 40g sugar + 10g salt
  3. Put hot rice in the wooden container and add in vinegar dressing
  4. Use a spatula and mix the rice
    (with some sliding and slipping action)
  5. Use a uchiwa (fan) to cool off the rice
  6. Once cooled, covered and ready for making sushi!

W200xH250mm, Indonesia

This is Java Topeng in the form of a monkey.  Actors would wear these masks to perform a traditional dance.  These performance usually take place at night and will last for several hours.

This is a musical instrument known as the Okokan which is in fact a cow bell.  Originally the Balinese use the cow bell to keep track of their cows and buffalos in the field.  When the herd of cows move, the bell would sound like music playing.  This inspire the farmers to use it was an entertainment during harvest, it is also believe that the evil can be steered away as it does to the flies for the cows.  This Okokan is in the shape of a head with the tongue being the clapper.

This is an Indonesian topeng mask use for traditional dance drama which is most popular in Bali and Java.  These dances accompanied by gamelan music are performed during temple festivals and in ceremonies.

This wooden figure is covered in gold leave with painted features of the face (unfortunately the costume is no longer present).  This particular figure has small bounded feet in red shoes.  The Sea Goddess is believed to have the power to protect those at sea.  Traditionally, the figurine is paraded at festive activities such as the Sea Goddess birthday (3rd Moon, day 23) blessing the people in the area.
