Dunhuang – Untold Tales, Untold Riches

Dunhuang was a major city along the silk road, the Dunhuang caves are a time capsule of the arts, religion, history of the period.

The artifacts in the exhibition are replicas which included 3 full size caves and a 13 meter long Buddha.
I do appreciate that the works have not been destroy for our pleasure and benefits.  The replicas are more than good enough for me.

The pekingese dogs featured in yesterday’s post is also known as a “shi zi” dog, a lion dog.

Lion, shi zi, is not an animal originated from China, its legendary power and strength has captured the imagination of the people. Though worship for their bravery and power, they are often portrayed as a playful creature.  Looking at the clip of the two lions playing, it seems that the Chinese image of the lion look closer to that of a pekingese dog than the lion itself.  I wonder if shi zi dog (pekingese) would have been bred basing on this traditional image of the shi zi.

The buddhist rosary, Mala, is used for counting the number of times the Mantra is recited.

This is a 108 beads wrist mala, if you count the numbers there are actually 109 beads including the center Guru bead.  The Guru bead symbolizes the Guru from whom one has received the mantra being recited.  The 108 beads represented the 108 earthly desires; the 6 senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and consciousness) multiplied by 3 reactions (positive, negative, or indifference) making 18 “feelings.” Each of these feelings can be either “attached to pleasure or detached from pleasure” making 36 “passions”, each of which may be manifested in the past, present, or future.

For those of us who indulge in the memory of old Hong Kong, dont miss the chance to see Fan Ho‘s work in Hong Kong.
His photos not only capture the history of time but also the romance and humor.  It is as if one would re-enter this filmic place through the frame of his camera.
